News from the Rec Department

by Lynn McCaffrey, Recreational Gymnastics Director

Hair...

It is very important that your child (every age) has their hair pulled up and out of their face.  Everything we do in gymnastics is upside down, which means hair hanging in the face. For the safety of your child, please make sure that when your daughter gets her leotard on, you make sure her hair is put up in binders and/or hair clips. If you have any questions or comments about your daughter's class or teachers, please feel free to email Lynn the Girls Recreational Director at lynnm@metrogymnastics.com.

Why Gymnastics?

There are so many benefits to doing gymnastics. Today  we will talk about the PHYSICAL BENEFITS*:

Muscle Strength
Gymnasts will get Muscle strength through tumbling, jumping & stretching.  Over time the gymnasts will get stronger  & improve their balance for all the things they do!

Healthy Bones
All weight –bearing activities help to develop strong and healthy bones!

Flexibility
Flexibility is so important in everyday life – it reduces tensions, helps with coordination, develops body awareness & promotes circulation!

Gymnastics provides fun skills that children love to do – when they engage in physical activity  they will be more likely to get up off the couch and keep moving  now and in their future!

Next month we’ll cover the non-physical benefits that gymnastics offers.

Magic Years

by Marylynn Craig, Magic Years Preschool Director

We ended the year 2009 at Magic Years Preschool with a wonderful Christmas Program at Tualatin Foursquare Church on December 15th. Our theme was Lead the Way to Christmas! We had animals, angels, shepherds, gift carriers & Mary & Joseph. 55 precious children sang, danced, played instruments, performed and warmed our hearts with the spirit of Christmas shining through them.

The letters we worked on in the MWF and Pre-k class in the month on November and December we're Ee, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii and Jj. Some of the highlights we're a field trip to Evergreen Aviation Museum, Indians, Pilgrims & recreating the 1st Thanksgiving with our am & pm classes. The 4 and 5 year olds came together planting crops, making butter, building the storehouse, basting turkeys at the water table and making dream catchers. We had a feast together just as they did on the "1st Thanksgiving."

We had Freeze Frame Photography come in December to take family photos for those who signed up. They turned out beautiful!!!

In December we made Heavenly angels, worked with sugar cubes to build igloos, had an indoor snowstorm and finished up with candy cane cradle/Jesus and Jumping Rudolphs. What fun we had!!!

Our TUTH class was busy in November painting with feathers, making Indian drums, playing turkey in the farmyard & making stone soup, a friendship fruit salad and Indian fry bread for their Thanksgiving celebration. December was filled with lots of holiday fun. The children made gifts for their families, holly berry wreaths, glitter angels and reindeer puppets. We ended the month with a sugar cone decorating party.

As we enter into January we look forward to making many more happy memories here at Magic Years Preschool with your children! :)

Our Open House for Fall Enrollment 2010-2011 is on Friday January 22nd from 12:30-2:30 p.m.  We look hope to see you there.

Sincerely,
Teacher Marylynn
