Hamers in NCAA National Gymnastics Championships
You may not know this, but Metro gymnast Adam Hamers competed for his first time in NCAA's National Gymnastics Championships this year. Adam is a sophomore on the University of Michigan's Men's Gymnastics team. Gymnastics talent runs in the Hamers family - Adam's younger brother Garrett recently won the Oregon State Men's Gymnastics title on the Pommel Horse.
Adam made the 6-man line-up on the Michigan Team, qualified into the top 12, and earned the chance to compete against a field of the top Pommel Horse swingers in the country for the title of NCAA Champion. In the end, Adam's solid routine took 7th place in the Championships, capturing All-American honors (All-American status is given to the top 8 finishers on each event), to add to the All-American status he gained as a member of the second-placing team he was representing. Join the entire Metro family in giving big congratulations to Adam and his family! Go Bears...I mean Wolverines!
Competitive Team Progressing
This year was a building year for the Metro Boys Team. Most boys moved
up to more difficult levels and struggled to learn the skills required for
the routines they were expected to compete. Even while working up the learning
curve, the Boys Team did have a few State Champions this year, including
Garrett Hamers, as mentioned above. Also winning State Titles on individual
events were Grant Balsbough on the Pommel horse in the Level 4, 6-7 year-old
age group, Quinn Milionis in the 12+ Level 5 division on the Vault, and
Brandon Waller, who earned half of the individual event titles for his level
and age-division, including a first place on Floor, Parallel Bars, and High
Bar! Way to go, guys!
Congratulations and a big good luck wish go out to Torin Carver and Garrett Hamers, who qualified at the Regional Championships for the U.S.A.G. National Championships, to be held May 7-10th in Cincinnati, Ohio. Also, in their respective levels and age-divisions, Angelo Reyes (Level 7, 12+) won the Regional Championship on the Still Rings event and Brandon Waller flipped his way to the Floor Exercise title. This is the highest level of competition allowed for these athletes, so it's very exciting to have two Regional Champions!
We're looking forward to a fun, but productive summer and an even better showing next year!
The Java Bean is open during your children's gymnastics classes. Stop by for a coffee drink, smoothie or snack. Cookies are baked throughout the day.
Check out our daily special!
We hope to see you soon!
by Lynn McCaffrey, Recreational Gymnastics Director
The Mini Nationals is rapidly approaching! The event, on May 16th, is a great opportunity for your child to show off his or her gymnastics skills. The children will do routines on the Bars, Beam, Floor and Vault. Contact Lynn McCaffrey for information about participating in this great event!
Summer registration has begun and many classes are quickly filling up. We are offering lots of make-ups during the summer months to accommodate your vacation schedules. Summer is the perfect time to increase your skill and flexibility levels by coming a 2nd or 3rd day.
Homework for the Recreational Level : Splits
If your child is wondering what skills they should be doing at home, suggest doing the splits. Being flexible in gymnastics is an important part of being a great gymnast. Splits can be done on the right, left sides and in the center.

Girl's Team Competes at USAG Women's Regional Meet
The Metro Gymnastics Girl’s Optional Team competed at the USAG Women’s Regional Meet held in Kalispell, Montana on April 15th through April 19th, 2009. Metro Gymnastics made a strong showing by sending four team members. Level 8 gymnast Mallory Kruse qualified both as an individual and as a member of the Oregon Level 8 State Team. Mallory scored a 9.9 on Beam and a 9.75 on Floor. Both of her scores contributed to the overall state score in which Oregon placed 3rd in the six-state region.
Chayla Sullivan, Jenny Bruce, and Kelsey Gray – All Level 9’s – also performed superbly at the regional competition. Kelsey Gray (an event specialist on Vault) scored a 9.1 performing a handspring front tuck, and placed second in the region on that event. Jenny Bruce placed 4th all around in her age group and Chayla Sullivan finished third all-around in her age division. Chayla also won gold on the Balance Beam and is the reigning regional beam champion for Region 2. Congratulations Chayla!
In addition to their wonderful performance, both Chayla and Jenny qualified for the Level 9 Junior Olympic Western National Gymnastics Championships in Bartlesville, Oklahoma coming up on the weekend of May 9th, 2009. Good Luck girls!
Best Wishes to Kelsey Gray
It’s with a heavy heart that we bid a fond Metro Gymnastics farewell to graduating senior Kelsey Gray. Everyone at Metro Gymnastics would like to express our most sincere thanks to Kelsey for all her dedication, inspiration, support, and leadership that she's shown throughout the years. Kelsey has made such a positive impact on all our lives throughout her gymnastics career. Good Luck in your future Kelsey… stop by as often as you can!

Good sportsmanship doesn't happen by chance. But it can become second nature when coaches, administrators, and players make it a priority. Here are 10 reminders to help you keep character front and center:
1. Great coaches and athletes model good behavior every day.
2. Honor the letter and spirit of the rules.
3. Promote good sportsmanship in the stands by enlisting home game “ambassadors.”
4. Concentrate on winning with honor, not winning at all costs.
5. Make decisions as if your mother/child were looking over your shoulder.
6. Don’t make cheating an option.
7. Congratulate everyone, including the opposing coach.
8. Focus on the team, not the stars.
9. Have fun without winning.
10. Make sports a setting for learning.
by Aimé Kelly, Club Metro Director
Jumping Headfirst into the Inside, Outdoors & the Arts.
In addition to the well-equipped world of Metro Gymnastics’ facility, which
provides fabulous physical exploration, Club Metro kids get a jump on life
headfirst into the arts and outdoors. Club Metro philosophy focuses not
only on fitness and the body, but cultivates mental and creative exploration
as well.
As we near the end of the 2008/09 school year many of our group ventures are coming to fruition. Our community tile project is almost finished, as well as the earth-friendly recycled “In Your Head” create-a-creature installation. Emphasis on individual interests and process within set criteria is our goal. The intention of these multiphase art projects is to both challenge and inspire. As we transition from a time of indoor activity to radiant, warm afternoons, Club Metro explores the outdoors from wet water fun to kickball in the sun.
