A Tricky Summer!
This summer is flying by and I guess that's a good thing, going by the old axiom "Time flies when you're having fun." We've been having a lot of fun with a consistent practice schedule. We've been following the National Team warm-up (from when I was on the National Team), which includes practice on 3-4 events daily, a time for team and/or individual games, and conditioning/strength workouts for every level.
Many boys have taken vacations and come back to find a different, more structured practice waiting for them, and have done well in integrating into the new structure. We've also had three new additions to the team:
- Tyler Hillison, a new level 4 from the Metro Boys Recreational Program,
- Benjamin Foullon, also level 4 and from the Rec. Program,
- and Aaron Park, a Level 5 gymnast who recently moved to the area from
Southern Oregon.
Welcome, boys, and we wish you the best of luck!
Our boys are working hard and learning a lot of new tricks. I was hoping to have some videos of boys performing the tricks they've learned recently, but it's not so easy to take videos of 40 boys learning up to 10 new tricks on each of 6 events! That's 2400 tricks to video! I may be exaggerating a little, but we've seen a lot of great progress this summer, and it's still going on.
Just today, Quinn Millionis, Spencer Hanash, and Grant Balsbough did standing back-handsprings without a spot for the first time. Later on, I saw Ryan Bodyfelt perform inlocate, inlocate, backuprise on the Still Rings, which is a huge accomplishment. Ryland Silberbach did some great double-layout timers off rings. And Garrett Hamers did a very difficult swing to handstand that wouldn't have seemed out-of-place in collegiate or international competition. The skills and combinations keep coming and it's really exciting to be involved with the training of these young men!
Since I don't have any videos to share this month, I'll instead share a
link of a former Metro Gymnast, Adam Hamers (older brother to Garrett),
who was the subject of a photo for the winner of the annual University Photographers
Association of America Photographer of the Year Award. No doubt, the photographer,
Martin Vloet, is a great photographer (he also won in 2006), but without
the right subject the photographer is just another guy with a camera. Congrats
to both Adam and Mr. Vloet! The winning photo can be seen at this link:

A Big Thanks to Level 5 & 6 Boys Team
I would like to acknowledge the levels 5 & 6 Boys Team for their excellent
job on organizing the gym equipment and making the gym look so neat. They
did this with pride in the gym and enthusiasm.
Thank you Boys!

New Magic Years Classes
Magic Years Preschool Underwater Adventure Camp has been filled with many fun activities. We dove right into learning about sea creatures as we splished and splashed through each day. We went on an imaginary trip to the beach, built sand castles, flew kites, played in the water, blew bubbles and watched them dance in the wind, and we even played beach volleyball. We played many games...ocean blue, Who took the fish? Fish, fish, shark, The dolphin in the ocean and did the Seafood limbo to music by the Beach boys.
The children made edible sand and smores one day. We sang lots of songs around the campfire circle; I'm a little fishy, sing a song of seashells, In the deep blue sea, sail your boat, The lobster claws and more...Camp art projects included The rainbow fish, fishy stick puppets, decorating pails and camp t-shirts, marble painted and then sprinkled sand over seahorses and made a house for a hermit crab. Each day the children had a 45 minute gymnastics class that was included in the camp as well as a 20 minute open gym time. What fun we had!!!!!
The next Magic Years camp is the week of August 3rd and we will dive right in to an Hawaiian experience. For more info. contact Metro Gymnastics Center at 503 620-8939. We'd love for you join us!

Many articles have been written about out-of-control athletes throwing tantrums, but what if your child is the offender?
Familyeducation.com has some tips on how to talk with your child about sports misbehavior:
• “It’s not like you to act like that on the field.” Try not to be accusatory. Let him know you understand there may have been an unusual circumstance behind his behavior. Did an opponent push you? Were you responding to a referee’s call?
• “It’s frustrating when that happens, isn’t it?” It’s always helpful to validate a child’s feelings, even if you’re not happy with her behavior.
• “That incident may happen again, so let’s think about other ways to cope.” Playing sports can be frustrating. Discuss with your child acceptable strategies to deal with pressure, questionable calls, and unfair opponents.
• “Everyone likes to win, but it’s more important that you have fun.” Put winning in perspective and show how to win and lose with honor. Be sincere about your feelings. Talk about times when winning or losing was important to you.
• “Does your coach pressure you too much to win? Do I?” Parents often don’t realize what example they’re setting for their child. Key signals are how you behave when you play sports or board games, when you watch your child play sports, and when an official, coach, or your child makes a mistake.

Tigard School Teachers Need Your Help!
Metro Gymnastics is pleased to support the Tigard/Tualatin Foundation in
an important project that will help raise money for one thing and one
thing only… saving our teachers!
If you believe that our kids’ education is a priority, now is the time to show it. State budget cuts will have a direct and devastating effect on each of our 15 Tigard-Tualatin schools. Every student will suffer from the loss of talented, enthusiastic teachers; larger class sizes; and elimination or reduction of music, choir , PE, foreign language, art, after-school activities and high school athletics.
But together, we can make a difference! Our goal, to raise $1.3 million by the end of this summer, would provide enough funds to put one teacher back into every school in our district for the next two years (2009/2010 school year). We have to act now!
Show your support by purchasing a “Bridging the Gap” wristband at school. These bright green wristbands are available by filling out the following order form and dropping it off at the Templeton Office with a check. You can buy bracelets directly in the office or you can send an order in with your child and those orders will be filled twice a week and wristbands will be sent home with your child.
Adult size = $5.00
Child size = $3.00

Please donate more if you can so we can reach our goal even faster. There
will be other fundraisers this summer that will also raise money just for
this cause so look for them in the throughout the Tigard community. You
can purchase your wristband at Metro Gymnastics next time you stop by. Download
