News from the Rec Department

by Lynn McCaffrey, Recreational Gymnastics Director

We are glad to have Fall classes beginning and we still have openings in some of our  Rec. classes.

If your child is interested in becoming a team gymnast they might want to consider taking that second or third day this year (and we do offer a discount for multiple classes). The more your child participates, the stronger and more flexible she will become.

Attire & Readiness
It is very important for your child to come to class ready for warm-ups, which means hair is pulled up, leotard on, or T-shirt tucked in. Coming in correct attire is an important safety component. Also, being "gymnastics" ready and participating in the entire warm-up is very important. Stretching is a vital component of becoming a successful gymnast.

New Staff
Madeline Oeth, is joining our Metro staff this fall. She was a team gymnast at Metro, has just graduated from college, and is back with us as a instructor. She will be teaching in the Mini-Movers and Rec classes.

Open Gym

Open Gym is available on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 for ages 6 and over for all Rec and Cheer students. There is a $10 per visit fee, or you can purchase a punch card for 10 visits for only $75 - a $25 savings!

Friday 11:30-12:30 for all Mini-Mover students up to kindergarten age. $6 per child for members, $8 per child for non-members.

Open Gym is available for both members and non-members, so bring your friends and work out with our excellent coaches. Work on tumbling, partner or group stunting, and any and all gymnastics skills... it's your choice, it's Open Gym!

Rec & Competitive Cheerleading

by Dale Agbayani, Metro Cheer Director

All-Stars Competitive Teams
We are excited to start the new school year with a brand new competitive team! Last season we competed in Los Angeles at the All-Levels International Competition and finished in the TOP 3! The event was viewed via the web by millions of people all over the world! This was just one of the awards Metro Cheer Center earned throughout the season. Metro Cheer Center also finished with a PacWest 1st and 3rd place Nationals titles (our banner is showcased in the new Bring It On: Fight to the Finish film!).

Also, we finished with 2nd Place finishes in the Oregon Cheerleaders Coaches Association State Championships. The list goes on and on… in short, if that’s what we accomplished last season, what do we have to look forward to this season? We are still accepting members on our team, so come out and join an award winning program!

Our practices are on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 4:30-6:30 for those 8 years and over. We are developing a new Developmental Rec Program (see below) for 5-7 year olds who would like to someday be a part of our travelling competitive All-Stars team. Stop by some time and check out our practices.

The Future of Cheerleading
Did you know that this year the University of Oregon has a brand new Team Stunts and Gymnastics team? They are only the second college to offer Cheerleading as a Varsity Sport - University of Maryland being the first. For more information on the program visit: http://www.goducks. com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=500&SPID=11402&SPSID=105361

Developmental Rec Program

Be a part of a competitive team without the financial and time commitment! This program is designed for students ages 5-7 years old who aspire to be a part of a Youth Program, High School team, or Metro’s own All-Stars Competitive team and the costs is $75 per month, with uniform costs that will fit most any budget. Practices will be on Mondays at 5:30 and include a separate tumbling class. Participants will compete in at least 4 competitions throughout the season, making the Development Rec Program a great place for beginners to get off the ground in cheerleading!

For more information, please contact Coach Dale at 503-860-2966 or email at: Dalea@metrogymnastics.com.

Magic Years

by Marylynn Craig, Magic Years Preschool Director

A warm Hello from Magic Years Preschool

School has begun… It has brought with it new faces, new routines, new experiences and new joys. Children are creative, imaginative and curious about the world around them. They are bursting with energy and ready to have fun! Everything to them is a new experience! I believe that play is the work of childhood. It’s a child’s job to explore the world and figure out how he or she fits into it. I believe children are unique and our job is not to make children into what we want, but rather to help them grow into what they are. My expectations for children in my classroom are that they have opportunities to make choices, feel safe and secure, have a sense of belonging, feel loved, and that they have many opportunities to succeed! My hopes are that children in my classroom become confident, self disciplined adults who are not afraid to take risks and who have a strong understanding of who they are. I hope they will think for themselves, and solve problems on their own. Most importantly, I hope that they have high self-esteem, as this is the foundation on which one’s life is built - the foundation of successful, healthy, happy living. We are thoroughly enjoying your children - they are truly a delight to have in our class!

Sincerely,
Teacher Marylynn

Principle Eleven: A Letter to Parents of Athletes

Floridian Mike Dunford writes a blog called The Questionable Authority where he muses about “science, learning, and life.” He also works as a deck official at swim meets. Below are some of his suggestions to swimmers’ parents, which could apply to any sports parent.

A personal best is always a victory.
If doesn’t matter if they finish first or dead last. If they swam the event faster than ever before, it’s a victory.

Cheer for your children.
Do not yell at them. Do not tell them they’re swimming poorly. Never, ever ask them what the hell they thought they were doing, particularly in the first ten seconds after they get out of the water.

Cheer for other people’s children.
Your kid is on a team. Support the team. If you’ve got a pair of lungs that can rupture eardrums at 50 feet, why is it I only hear you during a few heats? If you don’t know anyone in a heat, cheer for everyone.

Be a role model for sportsmanship.
Swim meets are like cereal box contests: many will enter, few will win. Your kids are going to get a lot of practice at not winning. Teach them to show as much grace and class when they don’t win that they do when they do win.

Not winning is not the same as losing.
There are only two ways to lose in swimming. You can fail to show up or you can give up in the middle. Nobody who tries hard and makes it through the event is a loser. This is particularly true of little kids who take three minutes to finish a 25-yard freestyle.

Respect the officials.
Officials are not there to get rich. Or, for that matter, paid. The majority of officials are parents of swimmers. You can complain about the quality of the officiating, but we will be thinking, “If you think you can do it better, why aren’t you sweating your tail off on this deck?” This is particularly true if you’re complaining about why your kid got dinged while swimmer X did not when there’s only one stroke and turn judge for each end of the pool.

Principle Eleven of the Arizona Sports Summit Accord states that “Everyone involved in competition – including parents – has a duty to honor the traditions of the sport and treat other participants with respect.”
