Metro Boys Team

by Trent Wells & Luke Cartmill, Boys Team Coaches

Competitive Season Underway!

Hello from the Metro Boys Gymnastics Team! We have been working hard throughout the fall and are just starting to gear up for the 2009-2010 Competitive Season. The season kicks off the first week of December with the First Annual Oregon Team Challenge, hosted by Metro, O.G.A., and the Multnomah Athletic Club. The competition will be held on the Lewis and Clark College Campus and will feature a unique competition pitting the three teams against one another in an Olympic-style competition, which is very different from normal Junior Olympic gymnastics competitions. It should be really exciting, so come out and support our boys on December 5th at Pamplin Sports Arena!

I'd like to take a moment to congratulate our Future Stars athletes on their hard work this Summer and Fall. The skills and routines that they've been working on are extremely advanced for boys of their ages (as if gymnastics isn't hard enough to begin with), and all have made great progress this year. We're very proud of them for all their hard work!

Derek Pinto, who participated in the Future Stars program, participated in the Regional Future Stars Championships in Seattle in the 8-9 year old division. He was one of six boys to qualify to the Region 2 Age-Group developmental team. Derek placed 4th overall in the competition, and the top six make the team. Congratulations Derek!

Our Optional Team continues to improve, and we're expecting big things from them this year. Many of the boys are learning multiple-flipping, multiple-twisting dismounts on some of the events, and their overall tumbling, vaulting and technique on very difficult skills are improving. In a recent trip to practice at the Oregon Gymnastics Center, three Optional Team boys learned new, more difficult dismounts from the Parallel Bars - Cameron Stahl and Joshua Stoelk learned the Tucked double back flip and Torin Carver learned the Piked double back flip. Keep up the good work, Optionals!

We're looking forward to a very successful and fun Boys Team competitive season this year!

Magic Years

by Marylynn Craig, Magic Years Preschool Director

We welcomed children to our “Magical Preschool Kingdom” in September, “Where happy memories are made during these magical years.” On the 1st day of school parents we’re invited to stay for the 1st ½ hour of class with their child. At circle time we sang songs together and read the story “The Kissing Hand.” Then each child, with their parent, went to the craft table to make a kissing hand necklace. I noticed that Chester was missing… but he left us a note. There was a series of clues to find him. We traveled & toured throughout the gym which led us to our last clue at the Java Bean. Chester had left us a plate of “Hershey Kiss” cookies to share & enjoy at snack time! It was a wonderful start to the school year.

Some of the activities we did in September with our PreK and MWF classes included: Fairy Tales, Prince & Princesses, Aladdin wish bottles, castles and magic wands. We made an “All About Me” book and for the Letter 'Aa' and we made Alligators, Autumn is for Apples & Johnny Appleseed. We went on a Field Trip to the Oregon Heritage Apple Orchard Farm where we learned about how apples grow and the many different kinds of apples. We went on a hayride, went through a haymaze, fed the animals, jumped in the Bouncy Apple House and sampled apples and cider. What fun we had together! During the Letter 'Bb' week we walked on balance beams with beanie babies, Had a Beauty Parlor/Barber Shop, made egg carton school “buses,” played the beanbag game & Beauty and the Beast.

Our TUTH class was filled with lots of magical fun… Fairy tales, crown with jewels, a treasure hunt, I’m me, I’m special. We had a splashes of RED theme day, made Mickey Mouse silhouettes, did the Mickey Mouse march & played Mickey see, Mickey do. We finished the month with “Getting into shape with circles,” dit-dot painting and a shape hunt. All the children brought their teddy bears to school for a tea party!

October at Magic Years has been full of Harvest Time Fun! Some of the themes in the PreK & MWF classes included: The letter Cc cowboys & cowgirls, Handy candy corn, circles, triangles and squares & crows. The Letter 'Dd' for deer, Disney, DO RE MEI! Diamonds & Dragons, Dancing scarecrows, 101 Dalamations & fire safety. We then jumped right into Pumpkin Time, Red Leaf, Yellow Leaf “Colorful Leaves” & a field trip to the pumpkin patch. We concluded the month with Adorable squirrels, Let’s be Frank; “Frankensteins,” Mr. Pumpkin & the In the moon, Bats! We finished are Fall Assessments and had Parent Teacher conferences on the 22nd and 23rd of October.

TUTH class activities included caterpillars & butterflies, Black & Orange centers, Red and Yellow finger painting (mixing), The very hungry pumpkin, & Fresh, Fun Fall. We made leaves with eyedropper watercolors & did a seasonal sink & float activity. The children went on a field trip to the pumpkin patch, made the Itsy Bitsy Spiders and spun a web. We finished with Little Black circle cats and played the copy cat game.

Our Fall Festival was on Sunday October 18th and was a huge success. Many, many THANKS to all the parents. Whether you were on the planning committee, set-up or clean-up, or brought prizes for all the activities we greatly appreciate you so much!!! We had approx. 225 people in attendance. WOW! The Metro gym facility was transformed into a BIG Fall Festival: In the cheer room we had 9 games for the children to play and a family photo station set up where Mike from Freeze Frame Photography took pictures of each of the families. Down the hall in our new MWF combined classroom there was the arts & crafts activity where you could decorate a frame to put your family photo in that was taken of you. We had decorating pumpkins down the hall and in the main gym there was wheel barrow races, pumpkin sack races & the Big Bouncy Castle. Bobbing for donuts was a favorite as well as the 2 dressing rooms that were decorated with hundreds of lights and lit up pumpkins as the children traveled through an obstacle course to get a treat at the end. It was amazing!!! The children went through it over and over again! What fun we had!

November promises to be more fun… We will be going on a field trip to Evergreen Aviation Museum during the letter Ee week and we will begin our study on Native Americans, Colonial Kids, & Turkeys. Rehearsal/ Practice for our Christmas Program on December 15th starts Monday November 9th. Can’t wait!

Classes Still Open

We still have openings in our MWF combined 3 and 4 year old class. If you are interested in a tour or for more information please call 503 620-8939 and ask for Marylynn Craig.

Pro Shop

by Lynn McCaffrey, Pro Shop Manager

The Perfect Holiday Gift

Looking for that special Holiday present?  Metro can order your son or daughter a 4x8 or 4x12 folding  mat that can slide under a bed. We have floor balance beams that also fold up and fit under the bed.  Order now as delivery time is about 2 weeks. Check out our poster in the front office.

If your daughter ever complains that her hips hurt after bars, perhaps she needs a pair of shorts. Often times when she is working out hard, her sweat will make her skin stick to the bar rail and her skin can tear. Wearing shorts helps protect her skin, and when she casts it is a softer surface. We have a variety of styles in the Pro-Shop.
