Staff Spotlight – Coach Svetlo

Welcome to the STAFF SPOTLIGHT, it’s the fun way to get to know your METRO STAFF!

Each month we will feature a different staff member and have them answer a series of questions to help us get to know them better.

September Spotlight:

COACH SVETLO: Metro’s new Men’s Program Director and Boys Head Coach.

Svetlo grew up in Bulgaria, where he was a National team member of the Junior and Men’s Bulgarian National teams. In 2006 he came to United States as a circus performer for the well known Ringling Brothers Circus. In 2008 Svetlo started his coaching career and was awarded the Compulsory Coach of the year in 2013 and 2018 for the State of Oregon. Svetlo has also been a certified judge for the OGJA since 2015. Svetlo’s motto in life is to be positive and optimistic, to treat people with respect and always be willing to learn. He is  excited to join the Metro Family and put these ideas into practice.

“It’s a dessert but not a candy. It’s called Tikvenick. Translated it’s something like “pumpkin pastry”, if that even makes sense. Also, Tiramsu and all the other similar types of cakes.”

“Not much of a book reader but I like to read articles, I should get better at reading books.”

“Hmm … good one and hard one. I was all around gymnast but I am gonna have to say probably floor, because I got my got my first medal on it”

“Oh … another tough one. I like ping-pong a lot, soccer, tennis, skiing”

Spotlight Questions:

Before working at Metro, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
“Working in an Adidas Store, and xaxaxa [this is the Russian way to spell laughing] I just remembered I was working as a security in a resort.”

Were you a gymnast? How Many Years? What Level? Career Highlights?
“Yes, I was a gymnast from 7 to 19 years old. I was in the Bulgarian National Team. My career highlights were competing in the 26th European Championship, qualifying to the Event Finals on Floor in the International Meet called “Olympic Hopes”, winning National Title in Bulgaria”

Best vacation and/or most interesting place you have traveled?
“I have a lot… but one of them was when I traveled to Hawaii and did scuba diving there. Grand Canyon was pretty awesome too!!!”

How do you define success?
“Success is when we achieve your goals, and when you stumble the ability to move forward.”

What children’s character can you relate with most? And why?
“I think goofy, funny, energetic, adventurous, a kid that wonders a lot and wants to know everything.”

When you were a kid, what did you want to be “when you grew up”?
“I wanted to be a gymnastics coach most. Also, a Police Officer.”

Fun Fact or Other Info: “I climbed Mount Hood.”
